An encounter with a total stranger in a grocery store led me down the path to what I am doing today. I was a young mom, homeschooling my two children, who were then five and seven. We had set out on our trip to the grocery store and I was filling the cart with my usual foods. Little did I know the stranger standing in front of me, in the refrigerated section of the juice aisle, would change the trajectory of how I would feed myself, and attempt to feed my family, for the rest of my life. As I picked up the carton of orange juice she looked at me and the boys and said very matter-of-factly, “Do you have any idea how much sugar is in that?” I was confused to say the least. It was orange juice! A total health food in my eyes at the time! Intrigued, I responded, “What do you mean?” She proceeded to pick up the carton and shared with me the nutrition facts, pointing out that the added sugars equaled way more than anyone would every believe. I was stunned. I don’t think I had ever given a thought to the fact that orange juice had “added” sugars. She proceeded to show me another brand on the shelves that was quite a bit more than my budget allowed at the time, but had convinced me it was definitely worth it. I thoughtfully made the switch, thanked the stranger, and proceeded to move on. She said, “Well, do you mind if I share a little more with you.” “Are you serious? More,” I thought? At this point, I could tell the boys were getting frustrated. They were always so well-behaved when we were out in public, but I’m sure in their eyes this “lady” was secretly plotting to steal every box of artificial goodness in their cart, as she carefully went through the contents with a fine-toothed comb, and stated the facts. There were the box of popsicles. The Oreo cookies. The “Family Size” bag of potatoes chips. I felt like a thieve caught red-handed. As she carefully explained what was actually in these boxes, carefully crafted to entice all buyers, young and old. I listened. Although I don’t remember actually putting anything else back, other than swapping out my OJ, that was the day vowed to “try” to feed my family better. The boys? Although they are now almost 17 and 19, they still remember “the lady” to this very day.
Fast forward to over a decade later…What originally started off as a one-dimensional holistic health coaching business in 2018 has now evolved into a practice that offers several modalities for reaching your health and wellness goals. In early 2019, I obtained my yoga certification in order to be able to incorporate movement into my private health coaching sessions. After all, keeping our bodies active is important when looking to make changes both mentally and physically. I thought yoga would be the perfect addition. Boy, was I ever right!!
Becoming a certified yoga instructor (RYT 200) became the best gift I have ever given myself (and my clients)! 😉 I fell so in love with yoga that I am now teaching at multiple studios, holding one-on-one private yoga instruction, working with local high school athletes and volunteering to teach at several different places throughout the community. I am also now certified as a Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher (RCYT). I love giving back locally and helping to make the healing practice of yoga accessible to others, who may not otherwise have the time or resources to experience a class. Yoga has quickly become the forefront of my health and wellness business.
I will forever be a student in the practice of yoga. I am currently working on my RYT-500 with Yoga Medicine. An amazing program with a heavy concentration in anatomy and therapeutic modalities.
I love helping others discover how they can become their own health advocate by taking charge of their wellness through the power of lifestyle modifications. Whether your goal is to shed a few pounds, learn how to manage stress and anxiety, or you simply need guidance cleaning up your toxic environment, together we can tackle your goals! And just like that total stranger in the grocery store influenced how I would forever look at food, I too, hope I can influence you to live the best life possible by making the healthiest decisions available to you.
